2. Course Introduction

What did our Universe look like in the past and what has been its history? What are the constituents of the Universe and what is the nature of Dark Matter, Dark Energy and cosmic Inflation? What do other planets in the universe look like? This course provides answers to these and many other related questions by introducing students to the exciting research in cosmology and exoplanets.

In this course, we start by building a mathematical model of our expanding universe that obeys the famous Hubble’s law. Then, after reviewing the conceptual underpinning of the theory of General Relativity, we introduce the concept of spacetime and cosmic expansion via the Friedman-LemaitreRobertson-Walker cosmological model. Then, we present the equations that govern this expansion and discuss how they can be solved in simple toy universes. We discuss the constituents of our own universe that appear in the Lambda-Cold-Dark-Matter (ΛCDM) concordance model and show what cosmological history they induce. We focus on Dark Energy and discuss how it has been observed and what its nature might be. In the last part of the course we provide an introduction to the study of exoplanets. First we learn to describe the orbits of planets and stars and the composition of the solar system. Then we discuss the techniques that have been used to search and detect planets outside the solar system, a.k.a. exoplanets, and what we have learned so far about exoplanet population.
