Course Description

Course Introduction

The course provides an overview over the most important philosophers and topics of Classical Greek Philosophy (5thand 4th century BC): The Sophistic movement, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and the Epicureans.


Objective

1.To introduce the participants to the main philosophical ideas of the ‘classical period’, namely those of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

2. To enable students to read some portions of historical texts with a selection of important scholarly literature.

3. To help students to develop further skills in reading, analyzing, and criticizing ancient philosophical theories.

4. To help students see the importance of Greek philosophy for contemporary philosophical questions.
